Recitals & Concerts




Tenor Erik Gustavson (right), will, at long last, sing his Senior Recital on  October 6, 2008.  Songs by John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams complete cycle ON WENLOCK EDGE will be performed.  Sahar Nouri is Erik's colaborative pianist.
Sarah Bowlin and Chrystal Smothers, violins; Padua Canty, viola and Nadia Klein cello join Erik and Sahar for the Vaughan Williams.




On Monday, October 27, 2008, the singers of Studio 303
will present a concert devoted entirely to the songs of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.  The Opus 5 song settings, plus those of Opus 18 and Opus 67 (Haugtussa Songs), will be performed and Grieg's famous En Svane, Solvieg's Song and Fra Monte Pincio will also be sung.  The concert will begin at 7:30 in ASU's Organ Hall with a reception to follow.  





On Thursday, December 4, 2008, The ASU Thursday French Diction Class will present a concert of 19th century French Song.  Twenty songs featuring works by Bizet, Saint Saëns, Massenet, Berlioz, Hüe, Hahn and others will be programmed for this recital.   The concert will take place  in the ASU Recital Hall at 5:00 pm.





On  Monday, February 16, 2009, the singers of Studio 303 present a program entiltled SERIOUS FUN which will feature humorous songs of William Bolcum, Tom Lehrer, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rodgers and others.  As in past 303 recitals, each member of the studio will sing a featured solo and then join in in the finale of the program.  Admission is Free.  Location: The Arizona State University School of Music Organ Hall.  The concert time is 7:30 p. m.








Soprano Rachel Policar  (right), sings Leonard Bernstein's comical and touching  I HATE MUSIC! on her Junior Recital which will take place Saturday, March 7, 2009 in the ASU School of Music's Organ Hall at 7:30 pm. Songs and arias by Gaetano Donizetti, Cécile Chaminade,  Robert Schumann, Kirke Mecham and Yehude Weiner will also be featured on the program.  Pianist Stephen Schermitzler  will play.







 Soprano Katy Olsen (left),  sings her Senior Recital on Monday, March 30, 2009 to be performed in the Recital Hall at 7:30 pm.  Her program will feature Benjamin Britten's startling LES ILLUMINATIONS and excerpts from Samuel Barber's poignant HERMIT SONGS and a cycle of songs by Francis Poulenc.   Collaborative artists Dallas Heaton  and Sahar Nouri are Katy's pianists for the program.




On Thursday, April 2, 2009, at 7:30 in the ASU Organ Hall, tenor Justin Carpenter (right), will present his Junior Recital featuring songs and arias by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Saint Seäns, Chaminade, Liszt, Fenzi and Leoncavalo.   His collaborator is pianist SeHee Lee.




Tenor Gregory Amerind (lower left) presents his Masters Recital on Sunday, April 5, 2009 in Katzin Concert Hall at 5:00.  Benjamin Britten's MICHALANGELO SONNETS, works  by Gershwin (in new arrangements),  and other songs fill out the program.   Dallas Heaton is his pianist.






Soprano Tiffany Mortensen (right) presents her Senior Recital on Monday, April 6, 2009 ASU School of Music's Organ Hall.  Concert time is 7:30 pm.  Featured on the Program are Dominic Argento's ELIZABETHEN SONGS and Claude Debussy's CHANSON DE BILITIS and arias from Douglas Moore's THE BALLADE OF BABY DOE plus other songs.  She will sing with pianist Sara Stapley.





2007-2008
Recitals & Concerts

Studio 303 celebrates the life and work of French composer Cécile Chaminade in a studio recital of her songs entitled La Voix d'une Femme (One Woman's Voice).  Chaminade's compositions are joyously lyric and delightfully singable and were inspired by some of the most important  French poetry of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  The concert will take place on Monday, October 29. 2007 in ASU's Organ Hall at 7:30 pm.

Music theater songs and operatic arias and ensembles about characters in conflict will be featured on the second Studio 303 concert of this season to be held on Monday, February 11, 2008 in the School of Music's Organ Hall; time, 7:30 pm.  The program is entitled "SQUABBLES" and will include  music from The Barber of Seville, Der Freischütz, Don Pasquale, The Old Maid and the Thief, The Abduction from the Seraglio, Albert Herring, The Magic Flute, The Secret Garden, Kiss Me Kate, Little Women, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Last Five Years, Tick, Tick, Boom! and more.
